We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Operations Manager Road Transport to lead and oversee our UK road transport operations. The ideal candidate brings a proven track record of managing transport teams, coordinating domestic distribution, and understands customs formalities for import and export activities between the UK and mainland Europe. This role is pivotal in ensuring operational excellence, compliance, and customer service and satisfaction.

The ideal candidate has deep experience managing domestic UK transport operations, is well-versed in import/export between the UK and mainland Europe, and maintains a robust network of trusted carriers. This role requires a hands-on and pragmatic leader with deep operational knowledge of the transport sector.

The Operations Manager Road Transport reports to the General Manager UK.

What are you going to do?

  • Lead, motivate, and manage the day-to-day performance of the road transport operations team in the UK.
  • Manage the full spectrum of UK domestic transport operations, including route planning, driver coordination, fleet utilisation, and service performance.
  • Manage the full administrative workflow related to transportation, including shipment documentation, compliance, and reporting.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with a personal network of UK-based carriers and subcontractors.
  • Monitor and analyse key performance indicators (KPIs) to drive continuous improvement in service delivery and operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with other departments (e.g., Customer Service, Finance, Warehousing) to ensure seamless logistics and transport services.
  • Ensure all transport operations are compliant with UK and EU laws and regulations, including health & safety and driver hours.
  • Maintain strong, long-term relationships with a personal network of carriers, subcontractors, and freight partners across the UK.
  • Take full ownership of transport administration, including freight documentation, customs forms, CMRs, and invoicing checks.

  • Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in UK domestic transport and distribution
  • Demonstrable experience managing operational teams in road transport environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of customs formalities, including import and export between the UK and mainland Europe.
  • Established personal network of UK-based transport carriers and subcontractors.
  • Solid administrative and planning skills, with a detail-oriented and structured approach to work.
  • Strong knowledge of UK road transport regulations and industry best practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to lead and influence at all levels.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple tasks, and meet tight deadlines.

++Preferred qualifications:++

  • Degree or vocational qualification in Transport Management
  • Experience working in a fast-paced and dynamic international transport company
  • Experience with post-Brexit EU-UK transport procedures
  • Proven track record in domestic distribution in the United Kingdom and deep understanding of groupage and time-critical freight.
